WHY SNAKE & BUTTERFLY?

No, we aren't a pet shop. Our name comes from the mythology of Quetzalcoatl, the Aztec god of wind and wisdom, who gifted his people with chocolate. One important myth describes Quetzalcoatl, the priest-king of Tula, as never having offered human sacrifices, only birds, snakes, and butterflies.

WHAT IS BEAN TO BAR CHOCOLATE?

At Snake & Butterfly we process our own cocoa beans, not somebody else's chocolate. We source our own organic, fair-trade cocoa nibs from a family farm in the Dominican Republic. We roast and refine them in our own little factory in downtown Campbell, CA and then use the chocolate for all sorts of wonderful things!

Y’ALL SEEM TO HAVE A LOT OF SOCIAL & POLITICAL THINGS GOING ON…?

Damn straight. We are very committed to supporting our local (and world) community, in small and large ways. Our values have informed all of our decisions and practices over the last twelve years. We’re pretty thrilled to talk to you about the things we’re working on so come in and chat, or drop us an email!

WILL YOU DONATE TO MY CHURCH, KID’S SCHOOL, CHARITY, OR EVENT…?

We’d love to say yes to everyone, but unfortunately we can’t. Each of our partners makes a charitable donation to something that matters deeply to us (ACLU, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Be the Match Foundation, etc)

WHAT ARE NIBS

Nibs are cacao beans that have been removed from their hulls and broken into small pieces. They're similar in texture to roasted coffee beans, but better!

IS YOUR CHOCOLATE VEGAN?

Many of our products are vegan! Please check our ingredient lists.

ARE YOUR PRODUCTS MILK FREE? AND GLUTEN? WHAT ABOUT SOY?

All of our chocolate bars are gluten, and soy free. Some of our confections are as well. Please check the ingredients if you have allergies!  All of our truffles and caramels contain milk, currently.

DOES YOUR CHOCOLATE CONTAIN NUTS

While we offer many varieties of chocolate without nuts, we cannot at this time guarantee that our products are completely nut-free. If you have a nut allergy we strongly recommend that you do not consume our products.

HOW SHOULD CHOCOLATE BE STORED

Chocolate should be stored in a cool (60 - 70 degrees F) and dry place. If room temperature is too warm, chocolate may be kept in the refrigerator but it should be placed in an airtight container, as it can easily absorb strong smells and moisture.

WILL YOU DO CUSTOM ORDERS?

Absolutely! Don't see a gift box that fits your taste? We can build one to your specifications. Want favors for a special occasion? We can do that too. Have a great idea for a new flavor? Send us an email and we'll see what we can do.

WHAT IS THE DEAL WITH YOUR SHIPPING MATERIAL?

We finally found a use for our junk mail! In the interest being green and saving green, we've decided to reuse (whenever possible) materials for shipping. That means no styrofoam peanuts or bubble wrap unless it came from an order we received!
